Introduction
Arcane came out a couple of years back, and as a fan of League of Legends, I felt pulled to check it out. I used to play League back in the day, though never hardcore. I’m more of an open-world campaign guy. Still, I had a great time playing multiplayer games like Call of Duty and League with my friends. I remember the good old days of League’s Season 4. Crazy to think that was 2014.
After that, I drifted away from gaming, aside from Minecraft, which I still fire up now and then. But League always stood out to me even after I stepped back, mostly because of its epic cinematic trailers and music videos. So when Arcane popped up on Netflix, it was both surprising and exciting. Still took me a while to actually sit down and watch it, though.
I’ll be honest. I didn’t have high hopes. Game adaptations usually turn out pretty bad in one way or another. But that wasn’t the case with Arcane. In my opinion, it’s not just the best game adaptation ever made. It’s an amazing series on its own terms, full stop. And it doesn’t stop there.
Watch Arcane
Watch Arcane and experience the best video game adaptation ever brought to life in a series. It's a must-see journey of incredible storytelling, stunning animation, and unforgettable characters.
Overview
I’m a huge fan of movies and shows, and when a series is done as well as Arcane, it’s genuinely something to see. If I had to list the bad things about this series, it would be a ridiculously short list. The show’s strengths completely overshadow any minor issues. So let’s dive into what made Arcane not just one of the best series overall, but the best video game adaptation ever made.
And honestly, I’m going to rant a bit about how good this series is, for two big reasons. First, it blew away my expectations. I didn’t expect it to be this amazing, and that excitement still sticks with me. Second, it’s refreshing to see a game adaptation with this much unique direction and craftsmanship. It didn’t just copy the game’s vibe. It elevated it. That’s rare.
Animation
The animation style in Arcane is nothing short of stunning. Every frame feels like a work of art. Seriously, pause at any moment, and it looks like a beautifully crafted painting. It’s as if the team took the elegance of 2D art and breathed life into it with 3D techniques. That blend is incredibly unique, much like what Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse did for its genre. Both Arcane and Spider-Verse broke the mold, delivering a visual style that feels fresh and different from anything else out there.

What sets Arcane apart is how much attention to detail went into every scene. The textures, lighting, and colors are carefully crafted, building a rich, immersive world. You can feel the effort and passion behind every frame. Beyond the technical brilliance, the way characters express emotion is remarkable. Their subtle facial expressions, body language, and interactions feel real, and that pulls you deeper into their struggles and relationships.
This is a unique visual experience, one that brings something genuinely new to animation, just like Spider-Verse did. Huge credit to the team behind it. The care that went into every aspect of the animation is obvious. It’s one of the reasons Arcane stands out, not just as a great video game adaptation, but as a groundbreaking series in its own right.
Characters
The characters in Arcane are one of the series’ strongest elements. Each one is deeply written, with their own unique personalities and complexities. When I say “the characters have character,” I mean they’re not just there to push the plot along. They carry their own struggles, motivations, and emotional depth, and that’s what makes you invested in their stories. The show takes real time to explore their journeys, and it does an incredible job showing how past experience shapes who they become.

Vi and Jinx, the main focus of the series, are portrayed in a way that makes it impossible not to feel for them. Their relationship sits at the center of the story, and it’s heartbreaking watching them deal with shared trauma and the different paths their lives eventually take. The emotional ups and downs are intense, and the show doesn’t shy away from putting them through the wringer. Even if you’ve never played League of Legends, the series stands completely on its own. You don’t need the game to get attached to these characters or understand what they’re going through.
The show makes you care about the entire cast, not just Vi and Jinx. Other familiar champions from the game show up, given new life through rich backstories and motivations that make them feel like more than video game characters. Arcane really is an emotional rollercoaster. It doesn’t hold back, and the challenges and tragedies the characters face are raw and real, keeping the stakes high from start to finish. Next, let’s talk about how the voice actors bring these characters to life.
Voice actors
The voice acting in Arcane is absolutely spot on. Every actor fits their character perfectly, as if they were born to play those roles. The voices add an extra layer of depth to each character, making their personalities and emotions even more convincing. From joy and excitement to fear, anger, and deep sadness, every emotion lands with precision, pulling you right into the moment.
The cast’s performances elevate the entire series. They don’t just voice their lines. They breathe life into these characters. Whether it’s a quiet, intimate conversation or an intense, action-packed scene, the voice actors capture the full range of what the characters are going through. That emotional depth makes their journeys even more engaging and believable. A lot of care clearly went into casting the right voices, and the talent shows throughout.
That pain can either break you, or forge you into something greater.
Soundtrack and music
Imagine Dragons take the spotlight in Arcane, even making a fun cameo in the show. From the first note over the opening bridge scene to the final moments, the music plays a crucial role in shaping the experience. It’s not there to fill silence or add background noise. It actively enhances the story. Each track syncs with the emotional highs and lows of the series, guiding us through the intense and heartfelt moments.
Music matters in any show or movie, but in Arcane it feels like part of the storytelling itself. It doesn’t just set the mood. It carries the weight of the scenes and brings out the depth of each moment. Plenty of animated shows treat music as background dressing. Arcane makes sure its soundtrack actually stands out. The fusion of its unique visual style and carefully chosen music turns the series into something genuinely immersive.
The story
I’m not going to dive into the details of the story, because honestly, I’ve already said enough. This is a tale you need to experience firsthand. Watching it unfold for yourself is part of the magic. What I will say is that the story doesn’t disappoint. It’s incredibly well-written, with every twist and turn feeling purposeful and carefully crafted.

Sure, there might be a few tiny missteps here and there, but look at the series as a whole, and those minor flaws fade fast. Arcane delivers a narrative that’s gripping, emotional, and rich with depth. It’s the kind of story that stays with you long after the credits roll.
Rating
This series is an easy recommendation from me. It’s a beautifully crafted piece of work with a deep, emotional storyline. Every aspect of Arcane, the characters, the animation, the soundtrack, hits the mark. I’d confidently give this series an A+.
A quick update since I first wrote this: Season 2 arrived in November 2024, and it turned out to be the show’s final chapter, co-creator Christian Linke has said the team always had a specific ending in mind for the story. Whether you’re a fan of the game or not, Arcane has a way of drawing you in and keeping you hooked. Even after it’s over, it stays with you, leaving you thinking about the story, the characters, and the incredible world it brought to life.
Also, just a heads-up: this blog isn’t going to be just about design and development. I love sharing my thoughts on other things I enjoy, like movies, shows, and games, so expect more reviews like this in the future.
